Why you are not getting interviews
Are you sending off application after application and not even getting the initial screening call? This can be incredibly disheartening & frustrating. On paper, you know you meet the criteria for the job and you clearly have the required experience, so what is going wrong?
As a Career Coach and Personal Branding Consultant, these are the top tips I share with my clients, and if you apply them, you may just start getting those calls.
GENERIC CV
It's 2023, the market is competitive, so your CV must stand out. The mistake people make is they send the same CV for every application. Even if your CV was professionally written, you must brand yourself for each role. This means carefully matching your CV to the keywords in the JD (job description) & clearly demonstrating that your skills match the requirements.
NO COVER LETTER
Some adverts do not ask for a cover letter, but this does not mean you should not include one. This shows you really care about getting noticed. It helps you stand out, because you have made that extra effort. Your cover letter should be short and sweet. It is not a recap of your resume. It is a platform to demonstrate why you want the role and why you are a perfect match.
BORING BRANDING
Personal Branding simply means how you market yourself on your CV, cover letter and LinkedIn (if you use it). I cannot sugar-coat this one – being boring will not get you called to interviews. If a recruiter is seeing the same thing 300 times over, you need to be sure your brand is unique and interesting. Show some personality, highlight what makes you unique, don't be afraid of talking about your "superpowers". Your brand is how you sell yourself.
LACK OF CLARITY / CONFIDENCE
If you are not sure of who you are, what you want, and what you have to offer, how can you expect anyone else to be. When I teach Personal Branding, I always tell my clients to "begin with the end in mind". You need to know what you want and then brand yourself accordingly. If you know what job you want, and put some effort into your application, it will show.
You need to do this with a strong and confident mindset. Give yourself the edge by showing the recruiter you have researched the role and the company. Then demonstrate how you know you meet the criteria, or have the potential to do the job. Think about what impression you want to make. Do you want to blend in with every other applicant, or do you want the person reading your CV to think, "wow, she seems interesting, and she sounds like a perfect match for us". Position yourself as that person – that is what beginning with the end in mind means.
